Global Climate Change01:50

Global Climate Change

29.0K
Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.

Empathy

10.1K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

Summary

Recent Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) patients at Wills Eye Hospital are older, present later with worse vision, and have poorer treatment outcomes compared to earlier cases. This indicates a significant shift in AK presentation and prognosis.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Corneal Diseases

Background:

  • Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a severe microbial keratitis.
  • Understanding trends in AK presentation and outcomes is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify recent changes in disease severity and visual outcomes for Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) patients.
  • To compare patient characteristics and treatment outcomes between two time intervals (2009-2012 and 2013-2015).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of AK cases diagnosed at Wills Eye Hospital (WEH) from 2009 to 2015.
  • Defined treatment failure as best-corrected visual acuity worse than 20/100 and/or requiring keratoplasty.
  • Compared patient demographics, clinical presentation, and treatment outcomes between two distinct time periods.

Main Results:

  • Treatment failure rates increased significantly in the later interval (68% vs. 28%).
  • Patients in the later interval were older, received more pre-diagnosis corticosteroids, and presented with delayed treatment initiation and poorer vision.
  • A significant shift in patient profile and disease severity was observed.

Conclusions:

  • The demographic profile and clinical presentation of AK patients at WEH have changed significantly in recent years.
  • Current AK patients are older, present with more severe keratitis, later symptom onset, and worse initial vision.
  • Treatment outcomes for Acanthamoeba keratitis have worsened in the recent patient cohort.
