Background:

  • Determining the quality of life for glaucoma patients is crucial for clinical practice and public health initiatives.
  • Utility values, a measure of health-related quality of life, had not been previously established for glaucoma patients in Korea.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the utility values of glaucoma patients in Korea.
  • To identify demographic and disease-specific factors influencing the quality of life in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 833 glaucoma patients identified through the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
  • Employed the EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D-3L) instrument to calculate utility values.
  • Applied multivariate linear regression analysis to assess the impact of demographics and glaucoma severity on utility values.

Main Results:

  • The mean utility value for Korean glaucoma patients was 0.8968.
  • Significantly lower utility values were observed in patients aged 70+, those in the lowest income quartile, unmarried patients, and those with bilateral vision loss.
  • Poorer Frequency Doubling Technology (FDT) scores were also associated with reduced utility values.

Conclusions:

  • This study provides the first assessment of utility values for Korean glaucoma patients.
  • Patient demographics and disease severity are significant determinants of quality of life in this population.
  • The quality of life for Korean glaucoma patients, as measured by EQ-5D-3L, appears higher than in some international cohorts.
