Background:

Firefighting involves strenuous physical tasks that can impact firefighter health and safety.
Understanding the relationship between physical fitness and performance is crucial for optimizing firefighter capabilities and injury prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

To measure the physiological responses of firefighters during simulated firefighting tasks.
To determine the relationship between physical fitness parameters and performance in simulated firefighting tasks.

Main Methods:

Assessed aerobic capacity using the Modified Canadian Aerobic Fitness Test (mCAFT).
Measured upper body strength via grip strength (J-Tech dynamometer) and lower body strength using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) static floor lifting test.
Evaluated performance on simulated hose drag and stair climb tasks, analyzing completion times using Pearson's correlation and multivariable regression.

Main Results:

Simulated firefighting tasks elicited near-maximal heart rates (≥88% of heart rate maximum).
Age and right grip strength were significant predictors for hose drag completion times.
Age and NIOSH scores were significant predictors for stair climb completion times.
Cardiorespiratory fitness and grip strength showed the highest negative correlations with hose drag task times.

Conclusions:

Hose drag and stair climb tasks are physiologically demanding for firefighters.
Age, sex, resting heart rate, and upper/lower body strength are key factors influencing performance in these critical tasks.
Physical fitness assessments are valuable for predicting firefighter task performance and informing training programs.
