Summary

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can cause pregnancy complications, including repeated abortions. Successful pregnancies in SLE patients are achievable with sustained disease remission, safeguarding maternal renal function.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) poses significant risks to pregnancy outcomes.
The impact of SLE on lupus nephritis during gestation requires careful evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the influence of SLE on pregnancy outcomes.
To evaluate the effects of pregnancy on the course of lupus nephritis.

Main Methods:

Retrospective study of 10 patients with SLE.
Analysis of 29 pregnancies between October 1981 and October 1989.
Correlation of SLE diagnosis timing and disease activity with pregnancy outcomes.

Main Results:

12 successful pregnancies, 16 unsuccessful, and 1 medical termination out of 29.

2 patients with SLE experienced repeated abortions prior to diagnosis.

Successful pregnancies occurred when SLE was in remission for at least 6 months.

Two patients developed severe hypertension and elevated creatinine during the third trimester.

Conclusions:

Repeated abortions may indicate underlying SLE.
Successful conception and pregnancy in SLE patients are possible during sustained disease remission.
Maintaining maternal renal function is achievable with proper management during pregnancy in SLE patients.
