Drugs for Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis in IBD01:29

Drugs for Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis in IBD

533
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the colon and rectum. The primary drugs used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis are aminosalicylates. They exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. They modulate inflammatory mediators and inhibit the activity of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB). Aminosalicylates also reduce inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin and leukotriene production and decreasing neutrophil chemotaxis and superoxide...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis

1.1K
Introduction
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...

Anatomy of the Intestines

87.7K
Although digestion of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids may begin in the stomach, it is completed in the intestine. The absorption of nutrients, water, and electrolytes from food and drink also occurs in the intestine. The intestines can be divided into two structurally distinct organs—the small and large intestines.
Small Intestines
The small intestine is an ~7 meter-long tube with an inner diameter of just 2.5 cm. Since most nutrients are absorbed here, the inner lining of the...

Peptic Ulcer Disease II: Pathophysiology

2.2K
Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) is characterized by the development of ulcers in the stomach or duodenal mucosa. Its pathophysiology is complex, involving a balance between damaging and protective elements.
Damaging agents such as Helicobacter pylori, gastric acid, pepsin, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can weaken the mucosal defense, allowing hydrogen ions to infiltrate back and harm epithelial cells.

Peptic Ulcer Disease I: Introduction01:30

Peptic Ulcer Disease I: Introduction

863
Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) is characterized by mucosal excavation in the esophagus, stomach, pylorus, or duodenum. It can manifest as acute or chronic based on the extent and duration of mucosal involvement.
An acute ulcer, marked by superficial erosion and minimal inflammation, swiftly resolves upon identifying and addressing the underlying cause. In contrast, a chronic ulcer persists, potentially eroding through the muscular wall and forming fibrous tissue.
Peptic ulcers can also be...

Peptic Ulcer Disease IV: Management

533
Medical treatment strategies for peptic ulcers encompass various methods. The primary goal of treatment is to diminish gastric acidity and strengthen mucosal defense mechanisms.
The therapeutic approach involves ensuring adequate rest, implementing drug therapy, promoting smoking cessation, making dietary modifications, and emphasizing long-term follow-up care.
Pharmacological management
The prevailing therapy for peptic ulcers involves a combination of managing the patient's current...

Summary

A rare case of intestinal giardiasis mimicking Ulcerative Colitis (UC) was successfully treated with Albendazole. This finding suggests giardiasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of UC.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Parasitology

Background:

  • Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Parasitic infections causing colitis are uncommon in UC patients.

Observation:

  • A patient diagnosed with UC presented with symptoms suggestive of colitis.
  • Stool examination revealed the presence of Giardia cysts.

Findings:

  • The patient's condition, initially diagnosed as UC, was attributed to intestinal giardiasis.
  • Treatment with Albendazole led to a complete resolution of symptoms.

Implications:

  • Giardiasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis.
  • Parasitic infections may present with or exacerbate inflammatory bowel disease symptoms.
  • Timely diagnosis and antiparasitic treatment can effectively manage giardiasis-induced colitis.
