DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Imaging Biological Samples with Optical Microscopy

10.7K
Optical microscopy uses optic principles to provide detailed images of samples. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek designed the first compound optical microscope in the 17th century to visualize blood cells, bacteria, and yeast cells. In 1830, Joseph Jackson Lister created an essentially modern light microscope. The 20th century saw the development of microscopes with enhanced magnification and resolution.
In optical microscopy, the specimen to be viewed is placed on a glass slide and clipped on the stage...

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique that provides crucial insights into the body's physiological functions at a molecular level. It is an indispensable resource for diagnosing, staging, and monitoring various illnesses, notably cancer, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular conditions.

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Average Acceleration01:30

Average Acceleration

14.2K
The importance of understanding acceleration spans our day-to-day experiences, as well as the vast reaches of outer space and the tiny world of subatomic physics. In everyday conversation, to accelerate means to speed up. For instance, we are familiar with the acceleration of our car; the harder we apply our foot to the gas pedal, the faster we accelerate. The greater the acceleration, the greater the change in velocity over a given time. Acceleration is widely seen in experimental physics. In...

Average Velocity01:12

Average Velocity

23.9K
To calculate the other physical quantities in kinematics, we must introduce the time variable. The time variable allows us not only to state the position of the object during its motion, but also how fast it is moving. The speed at which an object is moving is given by the rate at which the position changes with time. For each position xi, we assign a particular time ti. If the details of the motion at each instant are not important, the rate is usually expressed as the average velocity. This...

Summary

Multiple enface image averaging significantly improves optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) image quality by reducing noise and increasing vessel continuity. Averaging three frames offers substantial benefits, with diminishing returns beyond five frames.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is crucial for visualizing retinal vasculature.
  • Image quality in OCTA can be affected by motion artifacts and noise.
  • Enhancing OCTA image quality is vital for accurate diagnosis and research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of multiple enface image averaging on OCTA image quality.
  • To determine the optimal number of frames for averaging in OCTA.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-one healthy volunteers underwent OCTA imaging using 3x3 mm and 6x6 mm scan protocols.
  • Nine OCTA cube scan sets were acquired per eye.
  • Superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) images were averaged after registration.

Main Results:

  • Averaging increased vessel continuity and reduced background noise in both SCP and DCP.
  • Contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and subjective image quality scores improved with averaging.
  • Significant improvements were observed with three averaged frames, with diminishing returns after five frames.

Conclusions:

  • Multiple enface image averaging objectively and subjectively enhances OCTA image quality.
  • This technique is valuable for developing optimal OCTA imaging protocols.
  • Averaging three frames provides a good balance of quality improvement and efficiency.
