    Summary

    This study examined five dementia patients, finding Lewy bodies and cell loss in the substantia nigra and locus ceruleus. These neuropathologic changes alone did not fully explain the dementia, suggesting other underlying brain abnormalities.

    Background:

    • Investigating the neuropathologic underpinnings of dementia is crucial for understanding disease mechanisms.
    • Lewy body pathology and Alzheimer-type changes are common findings in dementing disorders.
    • Substantia nigra and locus ceruleus are key brain regions affected in certain neurodegenerative conditions.

    Observation:

    • Neuropathologic examination of five demented patients revealed significant cell loss and Lewy bodies in the substantia nigra and locus ceruleus.
    • Minimal cell loss was observed in the nucleus basalis in three patients; it was unavailable in two.
    • Alzheimer-type changes were minimal in the studied cohort.
