    Context:

    • Four forms of viral hepatitis are recognized: Hepatitis A (HAV), Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis non-A, non-B (HNA-NB), and hepatitis associated with other viral diseases.
    • While HAV and HBV viruses are identified, the causative agents for HNA-NB remain unknown.
    • Passive immunity against HAV is achievable with human immunoglobulin, but protection against HBV and HNA-NB is less certain or requires specific immunoglobulins.

    Purpose:

    • To review the current status of immunisation strategies for viral hepatitis, including passive and active immunisation.
    • To highlight the advancements in vaccine development for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B.
    • To address the challenges in developing vaccines for Hepatitis non-A, non-B.

    Summary:

    • Hepatitis A vaccines, including live attenuated and noninfectious polypeptide forms, are under development with initial clinical trials underway.
    • A safe and effective vaccine for Hepatitis B, composed of purified HBsAg, is in widespread use.
    • Novel Hepatitis B vaccines derived from molecular cloning and yeast expression systems show promising results and are expected to replace current vaccines. Synthetic vaccines are also under development.
