This study shows that topological insulator (TI) surface states significantly alter magnetic insulator (MI) spin dynamics. This discovery offers new possibilities for spintronic devices by controlling magnetism through advanced material interfaces.
Area of Science:
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Materials Science
- Spintronics
Background:
- Magnetic insulators (MI) and topological insulators (TI) are key materials in spintronics.
- Controlling spin dynamics in MIs is crucial for advanced spintronic applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the influence of topological insulator (TI) spin momentum-locked Dirac surface states on the spin dynamics of adjacent magnetic insulators (MI).
- To explore the potential of TI/MI heterostructures for spintronic applications.
Main Methods:
- Fabrication of TI films ((Bi,Sb)2Te3) with varying Bi concentrations.
- Characterization of MI (Y3Fe5O12) spin dynamics within MI/TI heterostructures.
- Systematic tuning of Bi concentration in TI films to optimize surface state effects.
Main Results:
- The weight of surface states in TI films peaked at a Bi concentration of x = 0.32.
- An order of magnitude enhancement in the Gilbert damping constant of the MI was observed at x = 0.32.
- A strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy was induced in the MI, dependent on Bi concentration.
Conclusions:
- Spin momentum-locked Dirac surface states of TIs significantly modify the spin dynamics of adjacent MIs.
- The observed effects are superior to those achieved with heavy metals, highlighting the unique properties of TIs.
- These findings pave the way for novel spintronic devices utilizing TI/MI heterostructures.
