A new objective rating scale, the Structured Assessment of Laparoscopic Assistant Skills (SALAS) score, was developed to evaluate laparoscopic camera navigation (LCN). This validated tool demonstrates reliability and practicality for assessing surgical skills.
Area of Science:
- Surgical Education
- Minimally Invasive Surgery
- Medical Device Development
Background:
- Laparoscopic camera navigation (LCN) requires objective assessment tools in the operating room.
- Current methods for evaluating LCN are insufficient for precise skill assessment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate an objective rating scale for laparoscopic camera navigation.
- To create a reliable tool for assessing laparoscopic assistant skills.
Main Methods:
- Defined key LCN aspects: field centering, horizon angle, instrument visualization, surgeon verbal commands, and manual corrections.
- Developed a score based on intraoperative error evaluation from 80 procedures.
- Validated the score using video analysis of 20 laparoscopic cholecystectomies by four raters.
Main Results:
- The Structured Assessment of Laparoscopic Assistant Skills (SALAS) score demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha > 0.7).
- Low interrater variability (ICC 0.866) was observed for the total SALAS score.
- Experienced camera assistants achieved significantly higher SALAS scores than inexperienced ones (p < 0.05).
Conclusions:
- The SALAS score is a valid, reliable, and practicable tool for assessing laparoscopic camera navigation.
- This score can be utilized in future research on camera navigation efficiency and surgical training programs.
