Equity Theory01:26

Equity Theory

303
Equity theory explains how our sense of fairness influences the dynamics of close relationships. Rooted in social psychology, the theory posits that individuals evaluate fairness by comparing the ratio of their contributions to the rewards they receive. Relationship satisfaction is highest when these ratios are perceived as balanced between partners, promoting mutual reciprocity and a sense of justice.Equity vs. Equality in RelationshipsEquity is distinct from equality. Fairness does not...

Chromatin Packaging

19.4K
Each human somatic cell contains 6 billion base pairs of DNA. Each base pair is 0.34 nm long, meaning each diploid cell contains a staggering 2 meters of DNA. This long DNA strand is packed inside a nucleus measuring only 10-20 microns in diameter with the help of specialized DNA-binding proteins called histones. Together they form a compact DNA-protein complex called chromatin. The chromatin is further compacted into higher-order structures. The highest level of compaction is achieved during...

Each human somatic cell contains 6 billion base-pairs of DNA. Each base-pair is 0.34 nm long, which means that each diploid cell contains a staggering 2 meters of DNA. How is such a long DNA strand packed inside a nucleus measuring only 10 - 20 microns in diameter?
The chromatin
In combination with specialized DNA binding protein called Histones, the DNA double helix forms a compact DNA: protein complex called chromatin. The chromatin itself is further compacted into higher-order...

Introduction to z Scores01:06

Introduction to z Scores

11.2K
A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one.

Area of Science:

  • Psychometrics
  • Statistical Software Development
  • Educational Measurement

Background:

  • Traditional test fairness definitions focus on differential prediction and item-level measurement invariance.
  • Emerging definitions of fairness incorporate score equity, requiring analysis at the equated, reported test score level across subpopulations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce SEAsic, an R package designed for calculating and visualizing score equity assessment (SEA) indices.
  • To provide a user-friendly tool for researchers to perform subpopulation analysis on equated test scores.

Main Methods:

  • The SEAsic package in R facilitates the computation and graphical representation of various SEA indices.
  • It supports the calculation of all indices presented by Huggins and Penfield (2012) using user-provided conversion tables.

Main Results:

  • SEAsic offers efficient computation and diverse plotting options for multiple SEA indices.
  • The package is available on CRAN for Mac, Windows, and Linux users, accompanied by a comprehensive manual with examples.

Conclusions:

  • SEAsic enhances the assessment of test fairness by providing accessible tools for score equity analysis.
  • The package promotes rigorous evaluation of test fairness across different subpopulations at the reported score level.
