Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between vitamin D levels and hyperinsulinism in patients with recurrent miscarriages.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed vitamin D levels (sufficient, insufficient, deficient) and hyperinsulinism via oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) with insulin studies.
  • Recruited 155 patients undergoing miscarriage investigations.

Main Results:

  • Hyperinsulinism was detected in 58.3% of vitamin D deficient, 38.7% of insufficient, and 33.3% of sufficient groups (p=0.034).
  • No significant associations were found between BMI and vitamin D levels or hyperinsulinism.
  • Vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency was prevalent in both Caucasian (67%) and non-Caucasian (89%) patients.

Conclusions:

  • Insufficient or deficient vitamin D levels are significantly associated with hyperinsulinism in recurrent miscarriage patients.
  • Vitamin D deficiency may contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes like preeclampsia, preterm birth, and gestational diabetes.
  • Further research, including large trials, is needed to confirm if vitamin D supplementation improves pregnancy outcomes.
