Background:

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a common procedure for kidney stones.
Post-operative pain is a significant concern following PCNL.
Effective pain management strategies are crucial for patient recovery and satisfaction.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of peri-tubal local anesthetic infiltration in managing post-operative pain after PCNL.
To compare pain levels and analgesic consumption between patients receiving bupivacaine and those receiving normal saline.

Main Methods:

A case-control study involving 68 patients undergoing PCNL.
Patients were randomized into two equal groups: cases (bupivacaine infiltration) and controls (normal saline infiltration).
Post-operative pain was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).

Main Results:

The bupivacaine group (cases) showed significantly lower post-operative pain scores at 6 and 12 hours compared to the control group (p<0.05).
Total analgesic consumption and demand for pain medication were significantly reduced in the bupivacaine group (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

Peri-tubal infiltration with 0.25% bupivacaine is an effective method for reducing post-operative pain after PCNL.
Bupivacaine infiltration offers a safe and efficient approach to enhance pain relief and decrease analgesic requirements in PCNL patients.
