Mapping marine habitats is challenging, but predictive spatial modeling offers a cost-effective solution. This study successfully mapped coralligenous habitats in a protected area, aiding conservation efforts.
Area of Science:
- Marine Ecology
- Benthic Habitat Mapping
- Conservation Science
Background:
- Marine habitat mapping is limited by the cost and difficulty of sea-based surveys.
- Optical imagery is hampered by light penetration, and acoustic methods require extensive sea-truth data.
- Predictive spatial modeling presents a viable alternative for creating detailed benthic habitat maps.
Purpose of the Study:
- To apply predictive spatial modeling for mapping coralligenous habitats in the Tavolara - Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area.
- To identify key environmental drivers influencing habitat distribution.
- To assess habitat protection levels and inform future management strategies.
Main Methods:
- Utilized fuzzy clustering on scuba diving observations (sea truth) to identify five coralligenous habitats.
- Applied predictive spatial modeling using acoustic data and environmental variables (distance from coast, depth, lithotype).
- Performed a SWOT analysis to evaluate the method's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
Main Results:
- Successfully mapped five coralligenous habitats, with most aligning with European Nature Information System (EUNIS) types.
- Habitat distribution was significantly influenced by distance from coast, depth, and lithotype.
- High congruence between observed and predicted distributions and classification accuracy were achieved.
Conclusions:
- The predictive spatial modeling approach is reliable for mapping marine benthic habitats.
- Results provide crucial data for assessing and improving habitat protection within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
- The method can be applied to other Mediterranean MPAs to enhance conservation efforts at a basin scale.

Prediction Intervals
However, the point estimate is most likely not the exact value of the population parameter, but close to it. After calculating point estimates, we construct interval estimates, called confidence intervals or prediction intervals. This prediction interval comprises a range of values unlike the point estimate and is a better predictor of the observed sample value, y.
