Summary

Hypoglycemia, a common complication of diabetes mellitus, is linked to cognitive impairment. This study found significantly lower cognitive scores in diabetic patients who experienced hypoglycemia compared to those who did not.

  • Hypoglycemia is a frequent complication in diabetes mellitus management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between hypoglycemia and cognitive function in patients with diabetes mellitus.
  • To determine if a correlation exists between cognitive decline and hypoglycemic episodes, age, and diabetes complications.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted with 35 diabetic patients experiencing hypoglycemia (case group) and diabetic patients without hypoglycemia (control group).
  • Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State test (MMSE) after blood glucose normalization and stabilization of mental status.

Main Results:

  • The mean age of participants was similar between groups (56.77 years for cases, 53.73 for controls).
  • The mean MMSE cognitive score was significantly lower in the hypoglycemic group (25.29) compared to the control group (29.09) (p < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Hypoglycemia in diabetic patients is associated with cognitive disorders.
  • A linear relationship was observed between cognitive impairment and hypoglycemia, increasing age, and diabetes mellitus complications.
