    Summary

Radionuclide brain scans (GC scans) in elderly patients with neurological disorders were reviewed. Most GC scans were unhelpful for patient management, despite some abnormalities detected.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Nuclear Medicine

    Background:

    • Elderly patients admitted with neurological disorders often undergo diagnostic imaging.
    • Radionuclide brain scans using a gamma camera (GC scans) are one such diagnostic tool.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility and role of gamma camera (GC) scanning in the management of elderly patients presenting with neurological disorders.
    • To assess the diagnostic yield and impact of GC scans on clinical decision-making in this patient population.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 146 patients over 65 years of age who underwent GC scans over a 6-month period.
    • Analysis of scan reports to identify abnormalities and correlation with subsequent patient management, including surgery and drug therapy.

    Main Results:

    • Abnormalities were reported in 44 scans (30.1%) out of 146 reviewed.
    • Only a small number of patients (3) proceeded to surgery, and 11 commenced drug therapy based on scan findings.
    • The majority of GC scans were found to be unhelpful in guiding patient management.

    Conclusions:

    • Gamma camera (GC) scanning has limited utility in the management of neurological disorders in elderly patients.
    • The role of GC scanning in this demographic requires careful consideration due to its low impact on clinical decisions and patient outcomes.
