This study reveals significant gene expression changes in the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) during its phase change from solitary to gregarious behavior. These findings offer insights into the genetic underpinnings of locust outbreaks.
Area of Science:
- Entomology
- Genomics
- Behavioral Ecology
Background:
- Locust outbreaks cause widespread economic and ecological damage.
- Understanding the genetic basis of locust phase change is crucial for pest management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the transcriptomic differences between solitary and gregarious desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria).
- To identify genes associated with the phase polyphenism in locusts.
Main Methods:
- RNA-Sequencing (RNA-Seq) was performed on the central nervous system of Schistocerca gregaria.
- Differential gene expression analysis was conducted to compare transcriptomes.
Main Results:
- Two transcriptomes were generated, revealing numerous novel genes.
- Nearly half of the transcripts showed differential expression between solitary and gregarious locusts.
- Most differentially expressed genes were over-expressed in gregarious locusts, correlating with increased activity levels.
Conclusions:
- Gene expression patterns provide molecular insights into locust phase change.
- Identified genes offer potential targets for understanding and managing locust behavior.
