Radical Formation: Abstraction00:47

Radical Formation: Abstraction

4.4K
The electron of an atom can be abstracted from a compound by a relatively unstable radical to generate a new radical of relatively greater stability. For example, an initiator which forms radicals by homolysis can abstract a suitable species like a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom from a compound to generate a new radical. This ability of radicals to propagate by abstraction is a crucial feature of radical chain reactions.
Even though homolysis produces radicals, it is different from radical...

Brain Waves01:23

Brain Waves

4.2K
Brain waves are electrical signals generated by the neurons in the brain, which are regularly monitored to measure mental activities. Brain waves and their frequency ranges can be measured using an electroencephalogram or EEG. There are four main types of brain waves, each with distinct characteristics:

Organization of the Brain01:30

Organization of the Brain

2.7K
The brain is an integral component of the nervous system and serves as the center for processing sensory inputs, making decisions, and directing bodily actions. This complex organ is organized into three primary sections: the hindbrain, midbrain, and forebrain, each responsible for a range of vital functions.
Hindbrain
The hindbrain, located at the base of the brain, plays a vital role in regulating automatic processes that sustain life. It includes the medulla oblongata, which is essential for...

Brain Imaging01:14

Brain Imaging

754
Brain imaging technologies provide critical insights into both the structure and function of the human brain, enabling medical professionals and researchers to diagnose, study, and treat neurological disorders or psychiatric disorders more effectively.
These technologies include computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT scans), positron-emission tomography (PET scans),  magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),  functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and Transcranial Magnetic...

Anatomy of the Brain: Ventricles01:18

Anatomy of the Brain: Ventricles

9.1K
There are hollow fluid-filled cavities known as ventricles deep inside the human brain. There are two lateral ventricles, one in each cerebral hemisphere, and each has three different projections — the anterior, inferior, and posterior horns visible from the lateral side. A thin membrane called the septum pellucidum separates the two lateral ventricles. The slender third ventricle in the diencephalon is connected to each lateral ventricle via a channel called the interventricular foramen.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Science

Background:

  • Abstract concepts are fundamental to human behavior and cognition.
  • Understanding their neural underpinnings is crucial for a complete picture of the human conceptual system.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the neural basis of four types of abstract concepts: numerical, emotional, morality judgments, and theory of mind.
  • To examine the similarities and differences in the brain representations of these abstract concepts.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized neuroimaging meta-analyses to synthesize findings from multiple studies.
  • Examined brain activation patterns associated with numerical, emotional, morality, and theory of mind concepts.

Main Results:

  • Representation of abstract concepts is more widespread in the brain than previously thought.
  • Distinct neural areas are uniquely associated with different types of abstract concepts.
  • Commonly activated regions across domains include the inferior parietal, posterior cingulate, and medial prefrontal cortex.

Conclusions:

  • Abstract concepts are represented through diverse neural mechanisms, involving event-based, interoceptive, introspective, and sensory-motor representations.
  • The findings argue against a single mechanism for all abstract concept representation.
  • Identified key brain regions supporting abstract concept processing, linking them to episodic recall and social-emotional functions.
