Summary

Dengue fever in pregnancy can lead to adverse outcomes like preterm birth and stillbirth. Pregnant women with low platelet counts are at high risk for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).

Background:

  • Dengue fever during pregnancy is an increasing concern in Southeast Asia.
  • Limited data exists on the adverse effects of dengue on pregnant women and neonates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of dengue fever on pregnant women and their neonates.
  • To identify risk factors for adverse outcomes in dengue-infected pregnancies.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of clinical data from 20 pregnant patients with dengue fever in Vietnam (2015).
  • Evaluation of maternal and neonatal outcomes, including infection markers, delivery complications, and hemorrhage.

Main Results:

  • 90% of patients had primary dengue infection (NS1 positive).
  • Adverse outcomes included 20% preterm deliveries and 5% stillbirth.
  • 30% required platelet transfusions; 15% developed postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) with significantly lower platelet counts.

Conclusions:

  • Dengue fever in pregnancy poses risks to both mother and neonate.
  • Low platelet counts in pregnant dengue patients are a significant risk factor for PPH.
  • Early recognition and management of thrombocytopenia are crucial for preventing maternal complications.
