This study found that integrated mental health services improved resilience and reduced physical health symptoms in individuals exposed to community disasters. These positive outcomes were particularly notable for those with prior natural disaster exposure.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Public Health
- Disaster Medicine
Background:
- Resilience is linked to positive psychological and physical health outcomes.
- Community disasters can negatively impact mental and physical health.
- Integrated mental health services aim to support individuals facing adversity.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine resilience and physical health symptoms in individuals exposed to community disasters.
- To assess the impact of integrated mental health services on these outcomes.
- To explore the relationship between resilience and physical health symptoms post-disaster.
Main Methods:
- A multiwave naturalistic design was employed.
- 762 adult clinic patients were followed for 6 months.
- Resilience and physical health symptoms were evaluated pre-service and at 1, 3, and 6 months post-service.
Main Results:
- Perceptions of resilience increased over time.
- Physical health symptoms decreased over time.
- Increased resilience was associated with decreased physical health symptoms, especially in those with prior natural disaster exposure.
Conclusions:
- Behavioral health treatment within a collaborative model shows correlational evidence for reducing physical health symptoms and increasing resilience post-disaster.
- Findings support the effectiveness of integrated mental health services in disaster recovery.
- Controlled trials are recommended to further validate these findings.
