    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the utility of specific MRI sequences in characterizing focal liver lesions.
    • To identify signal intensity patterns indicative of different lesion types.
    • To assess the diagnostic performance of MRI at 0.35 T.

    Summary:

    • Twenty-one patients with focal liver lesions underwent MRI using T1, proton, and T2 weighted sequences.
    • Characteristic signal changes were observed: cystic lesions showed decreased T1, variable proton signals, and high T2 intensity.
    • Hemangiomas exhibited very strong proton signals, differentiating them from cystic lesions. Metastases and hepatoma displayed low T1 and slightly increased proton/T2 signals compared to normal liver.
    • MRI could distinguish cystic lesions and hemangiomas from metastases/hepatoma, but differentiation between metastases and hepatoma, or focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) and metastases, was not achievable.

    Impact:

    • MRI parameters can aid in differentiating common focal liver lesions.
    • This study highlights the potential of specific MRI sequences for non-invasive liver lesion characterization.
    • Further advancements are needed for precise differentiation between certain malignant and benign liver pathologies using MRI.
