    Summary

    Long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCn-3PUFA) intake was not associated with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis risk in postmenopausal women. This large study found no evidence of benefit from these fatty acids for arthritis prevention.

    Background:

    • Arthritis prevalence is increasing in the US.
    • Long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCn-3PUFA) possess anti-inflammatory properties.
    • Previous research on LCn-3PUFA and arthritis risk is limited.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between LCn-3PUFA intake and the risk of osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
    • To examine these associations specifically in a cohort of postmenopausal women.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective cohort study design.
    • Inclusion of 80,551 postmenopausal women (aged 55-79) without prior arthritis history.
    • Dietary intake assessed via food frequency questionnaire, with follow-up for incident OA and RA cases.

    Main Results:

    • No significant association was found between LCn-3PUFA intake (individual or total) and the risk of OA or RA.
    • Hazard ratios for highest vs. lowest quintiles of LCn-3PUFA showed no increased or decreased risk for either arthritis type.
    • Intake of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids was also not associated with arthritis outcomes.

    Conclusions:

    • This study, the largest to date examining LCn-3PUFA and RA risk, provides no evidence that dietary LCn-3PUFA intake reduces the risk of OA or RA.
    • Despite known anti-inflammatory properties, LCn-3PUFA may not play a preventative role in the development of these arthritis types.
