A rare lumbar spine chordoma led to recurrence and death despite surgical resection. Early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment are crucial for improving outcomes in these aggressive tumors.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Neurosurgery
- Pathology
Background:
- Chordomas are rare malignant neoplasms originating from notochordal remnants along the craniococcygeal axis.
- Lumbar spine chordomas are exceptionally rare, often presenting with a poor long-term prognosis.
Observation:
- A patient presented with persistent left-sided waist pain for two years.
- Diagnosis was confirmed as chordoma of the lumbar spine.
Findings:
- Despite surgical resection and spinal fixation, tumor recurrence was observed at 5 months.
- The patient succumbed to the disease 15 months post-diagnosis, highlighting aggressive tumor behavior.
Implications:
- Emphasizes the critical need for accurate and early diagnosis of lumbar chordomas.
- Suggests that broad surgical resection, potentially combined with adjuvant radiation and chemotherapy, is essential for managing this rare malignancy.
