  • Utilized SEER-Medicare data (1994-2010) for stage I/II lung cancer patients undergoing resection.
  • Excluded patients with second resections or preoperative oxygen use.
  • Performed multivariable logistic regression to determine oxygen use predictors and mortality odds.

Main Results:

  • 15.3% of 21,245 patients received oxygen post-discharge.
  • Oxygen use was associated with higher odds of death within 6 months (OR, 1.35).
  • Significant predictors included procedure, sex, race, histology, comorbidities, obesity, length of stay, complications, and discharge mode.

Conclusions:

  • Home oxygen use is common after lung cancer surgery and linked to mortality.
  • Several factors predict oxygen use at discharge.
  • Nearly half of patients discharged on oxygen were alive and off it by 6 months.
