Highly selective peptides offer a novel solution for resource recovery. This study developed peptides using Phage Surface Display to efficiently bind terbium and remove heavy metals like cobalt and nickel from wastewater.
Area of Science:
- Biotechnology and Materials Science for Resource Recovery
Background:
- Conventional resource recovery technologies face economic and ecological challenges.
- Highly selective peptides present a promising alternative for efficient resource extraction.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and identify peptides for the recovery of rare earth elements and heavy metals.
- To utilize Phage Surface Display for discovering peptides with enhanced binding affinities.
Main Methods:
- Employed Phage Surface Display to screen for peptides targeting specific elements.
- Developed peptides for the selective binding of terbium-containing solids.
- Developed peptides for the removal and enrichment of cobalt and nickel ions from solutions.
Main Results:
- Identified phage displaying peptides with approximately 100-fold enhanced affinity for terbium-containing solids.
- Discovered peptides exhibiting approximately 20-fold enhanced affinity for nickel and 3-fold for cobalt.
- Demonstrated the potential for selective heavy metal ion removal and enrichment.
Conclusions:
- Peptide-based approaches, identified via Phage Surface Display, show significant potential for resource recovery.
- The developed peptides offer enhanced selectivity and affinity for target elements like terbium, nickel, and cobalt.
- This technology provides a viable economic and ecological solution for managing waste streams and recovering valuable resources.
