Background:

  • Renal replacement therapy (RRT) has been utilized for decades in this patient population.
  • Limited multicenter data exists on burn patients undergoing RRT.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate demographic, treatment, and outcomes data for severe burn patients treated with RRT.
  • To provide a comprehensive overview of RRT use in a multicenter burn cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Multicenter observational study including 170 adult severe burn patients requiring RRT.
  • Data collected on demographics, burn characteristics, RRT mode, and outcomes.
  • Continuous venovenous hemofiltration was the preferred RRT modality.

Main Results:

  • Mean age 51 years, 38% total body surface area burn, 27 Injury Severity Score.
  • 50% in-hospital mortality rate.
  • Among survivors, 21% needed RRT at discharge, 9% at 6 months post-discharge.

Conclusions:

  • This is the first multicenter cohort study of burn patients undergoing RRT.
  • Mortality is comparable to other critically ill populations requiring RRT.
  • Most surviving patients achieve renal function recovery.
