Area of Science:

  • Nutrition Science
  • Cardiovascular Health
  • Molecular Biology

Background:

  • Plant sterols/stanols are known to reduce LDL cholesterol.
  • Emerging evidence suggests benefits for non-lipid cardiovascular risk factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current knowledge on the anti-inflammatory effects of plant sterols/stanols.
  • To assess their relevance in atheroprotection and cardiovascular disease prevention.

Main Methods:

  • Review of experimental studies (in vitro, animal models).
  • Analysis of human clinical data on phytosterols and inflammatory markers.

Main Results:

  • Anti-inflammatory effects demonstrated in experimental models.
  • Clinical data on inflammatory markers (CRP, cytokines) are inconsistent.
  • Limited data exists on phytosterols as adjuncts to statin therapy.

Conclusions:

  • Plant sterols/stanols show potential for cardiovascular disease prevention beyond lipid-lowering.
  • More clinical research is needed to confirm anti-inflammatory benefits and efficacy in cardiovascular disease prevention.
