Behavioral weight control (BWC) alone provided short-term weight, mood, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk improvements, similar to combined treatments. Further research is needed to confirm these findings in larger populations.
Area of Science:
- Behavioral Medicine
- Psychiatry
- Cardiology
Background:
- Obesity and depression frequently co-occur, increasing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.
- Individual treatments for obesity or depression may not fully address the interconnectedness of these conditions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the effectiveness of behavioral weight control (BWC), cognitive behavioral therapy for depression (CBT-D), and a combined BWC and CBT-D treatment.
- To assess improvements in weight, mood, and CVD risk factors.
Main Methods:
- Seventy-six participants with obesity and major depression were randomized into three groups: BWC, CBT-D, or combined BWC+CBT-D.
- Participants received 18 group sessions over 20 weeks, with assessments at baseline, weeks 8 and 20, and a 46-week follow-up.
Main Results:
- At 20 weeks, the combined treatment group showed significantly greater weight loss (5.2%) than the CBT-D group (0.8%).
- All groups demonstrated significant improvements in depression scores and 10-year CVD risk, with no significant differences between groups.
- These improvements were not significantly different across groups at the 46-week follow-up.
Conclusions:
- Behavioral weight control (BWC) alone achieved short-term improvements in weight, mood, and CVD risk, comparable to combined treatments.
- The findings suggest BWC may be a sufficient intervention for short-term benefits in this population.
- Replication with a larger sample size is recommended to validate these results.

Freezing Point Depression and Boiling Point Elevation
The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to ambient atmospheric pressure. Since the vapor pressure of a solution is lowered due to the presence of nonvolatile solutes, it stands to reason that the solution’s boiling point will subsequently be increased. Vapor pressure increases with temperature, and so a solution will require a higher temperature than will pure solvent to achieve any given vapor pressure, including one...
