Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of diseases and conditions encountered on a cruise ship operating in remote polar regions.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted on a cruise ship over 205 days.
  • Data collected from 910 consultations, with diagnoses coded using the International Classification of Primary Care, 2nd edition.
  • Statistical analysis included chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests for prevalence comparisons.

Main Results:

  • Infectious diseases were predominant (43.7%), with respiratory infections being most common.
  • Gastroenteritis was more frequent in passengers (11.5%), while cutaneous pathologies (26.6%) and allergic dermatitis (7.2%) were more common in crew.
  • Cardiovascular diseases (4%) and traumatic injuries (76.5% of traumas) were also significant, with one medical evacuation for gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

Conclusions:

  • Physicians on remote voyages must be prepared for emergencies and develop expertise in maritime medicine.
  • Findings highlight the need for specific medical protocols for ships operating in isolated areas lacking dedicated physicians.
