Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

33.3K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Induction

5.7K
An emf is induced when the magnetic field in a coil is changed by pushing a bar magnet into or out of the coil. emfs of opposite signs are produced by motion in opposite directions, and the directions of emfs are also reversed by reversing poles. The same results are produced if the coil is moved rather than the magnet—it is the relative motion that is important. The faster the motion, the greater the emf. Additionally, there is no emf when the magnet is stationary relative to the coil.

Self-Inductance01:24

Self-Inductance

3.1K
Mutual inductance arises when a current in one circuit produces a changing magnetic field that induces an emf in another circuit. On the other hand, self-inductance arises when the current passing through the circuit changes, creating a changing magnetic flux, resulting in inductance in the same circuit.
Consider a circuit connected to an AC source. As the current varies with time, the magnetic flux through the circuit correspondingly changes. Faraday's law tells us that an emf would...

Summary

Women with a previous post-term pregnancy have a higher chance of experiencing another post-term pregnancy and needing repeat induction of labor. This information can help in counseling and considering elective induction for better outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine
  • Reproductive Health

Background:

  • Previous post-term pregnancy is a known risk factor for subsequent pregnancies.
  • Adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes are linked to post-term births.
  • Routine induction of labor by 42 weeks is recommended to mitigate complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the recurrence rate of post-term pregnancy.
  • To assess the likelihood of requiring repeat induction of labor in subsequent pregnancies.

Main Methods:

  • Observational cohort study using data from 1986-2012.
  • Inclusion criteria: women with first and second singleton pregnancies.
  • Logistic regression analysis to evaluate post-term recurrence and induction rates.

Main Results:

  • 35.7% of women with a first post-term pregnancy had a subsequent post-term pregnancy, versus 18.6% of women with an initial term pregnancy (aOR 2.27).
  • Women induced post-term in their second pregnancy had significantly higher odds of prior post-term induction (aOR 6.08).

Conclusions:

  • A history of post-term pregnancy increases the risk of recurrence and repeat induction.
  • Women with a prior post-term pregnancy are less likely to initiate spontaneous labor.
  • Consideration of elective induction for women with a previous post-term pregnancy may improve outcomes.
