Summary

Exogenous ketone ester (KE) ingestion in team sport athletes did not improve exercise performance but did attenuate the decline in executive function after intense exercise. This suggests potential cognitive benefits of KE supplementation during demanding physical activity.

Background:

  • Exogenous ketones (KE) alter metabolism during exercise and may enhance performance.
  • Previous research has not investigated KE effects on variable-intensity team sports or cognitive function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the effects of KE ingestion on exercise performance and cognitive function in male team sport athletes during intermittent exercise.

Main Methods:

  • A double-blind, randomized crossover study involving 11 male athletes performing the Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test.
  • Athletes consumed a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution with either a ketone ester (KE) or placebo (PLA) before and during exercise.
  • Cognitive tests, heart rate, RPE, sprint times, and blood markers (glucose, lactate, β-hydroxybutyrate) were assessed.

Main Results:

  • KE ingestion increased plasma β-hydroxybutyrate but did not affect heart rate, RPE, or sprint times.
  • There were no significant differences in run time to exhaustion between KE and PLA trials.
  • Cognitive function showed an attenuated decline post-exercise with KE compared to PLA, indicated by fewer incorrect responses in a multitasking test.

Conclusions:

  • KE supplementation attenuated the rise in plasma lactate during exercise but did not enhance endurance or sprint performance in team sport athletes.
  • Ingestion of KE may offer a cognitive benefit by preserving executive function following strenuous intermittent exercise.
