Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection can cause severe liver issues. A combination of sofosbuvir and ribavirin showed promise in clearing HEV infection in a case study.
Area of Science:
- Hepatology
- Virology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging cause of acute hepatitis and liver failure in Western countries.
- Antiviral treatment for HEV is not routine, though ribavirin demonstrates efficacy.
- Sofosbuvir inhibits HEV replication in vitro, but clinical data are limited.
Observation:
- A case of acute-on-chronic liver failure caused by HEV was treated.
- The patient received a combination therapy of sofosbuvir and ribavirin.
Findings:
- The sofosbuvir and ribavirin treatment rapidly suppressed both Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HEV viral loads.
- This combination therapy demonstrated significant antiviral activity against HEV.
Implications:
- Combination therapy with sofosbuvir and ribavirin may be a potential treatment strategy for HEV infection in non-immunosuppressed patients.
- Further clinical data are needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of this treatment regimen for HEV clearance.
