    Summary

    Patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) show increased immunoglobulin-secreting cells, but their B cells are hyporesponsive to polyclonal activators. This suggests specific B cell subpopulations, not generalized hyperactivity, cause humoral immune abnormalities in PBC.

    Background:
