Adolescents can now be assessed for critical nutrition literacy using a new scale (CNL-E). This validated tool measures their ability to evaluate diverse nutrition information sources effectively.
Area of Science:
- Nutrition Education
- Adolescent Health
- Health Literacy
Background:
- Adolescents face confusion from increased nutrition information.
- Existing health literacy scales often target advanced learners.
- There is a need for tools assessing critical nutrition literacy in adolescents.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the psychometric properties of the Critical Nutrition Literacy Scale for Adolescents (CNL-E).
- To measure adolescents' perceived proficiency in critically evaluating nutrition information.
Main Methods:
- A five-item questionnaire administered to over 1600 Norwegian tenth graders.
- Rasch analysis, multidimensional Rasch modeling, and confirmatory factor analysis were employed.
- Psychometric properties of the CNL-E scale were rigorously examined.
Main Results:
- The CNL-E scale demonstrated validity, reliability, and good targeting for adolescents.
- All items showed statistical independence and acceptable fit to the Rasch model.
- No item bias or differential item functioning was detected.
Conclusions:
- The CNL-E sum score allows valid conclusions on adolescents' critical evaluation of nutrition information.
- The scale offers insights for improving nutrition communication for non-expert groups.
- Validated measures like CNL-E are valuable for assessing nutrition information appraisal skills.
