A novel swallowing exercise program, Swallowing Against Laryngeal Restriction (SALR), significantly improved key physiological aspects of swallowing in healthy older adults. This strength training offers a potential method for maintaining swallow health in the elderly.

  • Strength training benefits locomotive health in older adults.
  • Swallowing muscles, like locomotive muscles, are striated and may respond to training.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the biomechanical effects of a novel resistance exercise program, Swallowing Against Laryngeal Restriction (SALR).
  • To evaluate the impact of SALR on the pharyngeal phase of swallowing in healthy elderly individuals.

Main Methods:

  • 28 healthy older adults (75±7 years) underwent 6 weeks of SALR training.
  • Video fluoroscopy was used pre- and post-training.
  • 18 participants also underwent high-resolution pharyngeal manometry.
  • A control group (10 volunteers, 81±6 years) performed sham exercises.

Main Results:

  • SALR significantly increased upper esophageal sphincter opening (P<.01).
  • Significant improvements were noted in laryngeal excursion and posterior pharyngeal wall thickness (P<.01).
  • Deglutitive pharyngeal contractile integral increased significantly with SALR (P<.01).

Conclusions:

  • Pharyngeal swallowing strength training using SALR is feasible in the elderly.
  • The technique significantly enhances physiological swallowing functions.
  • Findings support developing exercise-based programs for elderly swallow health maintenance.
