In statistics, several tools are used to interpret the data. Measures of central tendency represent the characteristics of the data, such as mean, median, and mode. Additionally, measures of variance like standard deviation and range are used to find the spread of data from the mean. Relative standing measures the distance between data locations. Commonly used measures of relative standings are percentile, z score, and quartiles.
Percentiles are a type of fractile that partition data into...

Data are individual items of information obtained from a population or sample. Data may be classified as qualitative (categorical), quantitative continuous, or quantitative discrete. Because it is not practical to measure the entire population in a study, researchers use samples to represent the population. A random sample is a representative group from the population chosen by using a method that gives each individual in the population an equal chance of being included in the sample. Random...

Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity01:23

Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity

583
Adolescence is a pivotal period of identity formation, during which individuals begin to answer questions central to their sense of self, such as "Who am I?" and "Who do I hope to become?" Both parents and peers play critical roles in guiding adolescents through this complex developmental phase.
Parental Influence on Identity Development
Parents serve as primary guides and managers in an adolescent's life, offering support instrumental in decision-making and personal growth....

Self-Help Support Groups01:28

Self-Help Support Groups

359
Self-help support groups are voluntary, community-based organizations that provide a platform for individuals with shared concerns to exchange support, insights, and practical strategies for coping with life challenges. Typically led by group members or paraprofessionals, these groups form a cornerstone of mental health care, especially in reaching populations that are underserved by traditional healthcare systems.

Critical Region, Critical Values and Significance Level

13.4K
The critical region, critical value, and significance level are interdependent concepts crucial in hypothesis testing.
In hypothesis testing, a sample statistic is converted to a test statistic using z, t, or chi-square distribution. A critical region is an area under the curve in  probability distributions demarcated by the critical value. When the test statistic falls in this region, it suggests that the null hypothesis must be rejected. As this region contains all those values of the...

Random and Systematic Errors01:20

Random and Systematic Errors

15.2K
Scientists always try their best to record measurements with the utmost accuracy and precision. However, sometimes errors do occur. These errors can be random or systematic. Random errors are observed due to the inconsistency or fluctuation in the measurement process, or variations in the quantity itself that is being measured. Such errors fluctuate from being greater than or less than the true value in repeated measurements. Consider a scientist measuring the length of an earthworm using a...

Summary

Peer support interventions show promise for improving recovery in critically ill patients and their families. However, current evidence is limited due to low study quality, necessitating further rigorous research.

Area of Science:

  • Critical care medicine
  • Health services research
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Improving recovery after critical illness is a significant challenge.
  • Peer support is being explored as an intervention for critical care populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically evaluate studies on peer support for critical illness recovery.
  • To synthesize key elements for designing effective peer support models.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search across multiple databases (May 2017).
  • Independent reviewer assessment of study eligibility, quality (Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, Cochrane Risk of Bias), and data synthesis (PRISMA guidelines).
  • Intervention details summarized using TIDieR Checklist.

Main Results:

  • Eight studies (192 family members, 92 patients) were included, covering diverse critical care populations.
  • The most common model was in-person, facilitated group support during ICU admission.
  • Two studies using individual peer-to-peer support showed reduced psychological morbidity and improved social support/self-efficacy; other studies had low quality and reporting.

Conclusions:

  • Peer support may reduce psychological morbidity and enhance social support for critically ill patients.
  • Evidence for peer support effectiveness in this population is currently limited.
  • Well-designed, rigorously reported research is needed to evaluate this complex intervention.
