    Background:

    • Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) encompasses a spectrum of pregnancy-related tumors.
    • Identifying risk factors is crucial for early detection and management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate gynecologic and reproductive risk factors associated with gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.
    • To determine if certain occupational, medical, or temporal factors influence GTN development.

    Main Methods:

    • A case-control study was conducted in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area.
    • 190 GTN cases (hydatidiform mole, invasive mole, choriocarcinoma) diagnosed 1975-1982 were matched with controls.
    • Data collected via medical records and interviews, with slide review by pathologists.

    Main Results:

    • Positive associations found for professional occupations (OR=2.56), prior spontaneous abortions (OR=2.32), and longer intervals between pregnancies (p=0.03).
    • No association identified with contraceptive history, irradiation, ABO blood group, or male partner smoking.

    • Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia may represent a continuum of early reproductive abnormalities.
    • Occupational status and pregnancy history are significant factors to consider in GTN etiology.
