Background:

Growing demand for safe and effective healthcare necessitates enhanced nursing competence.
Clinical nurse specialist (CNS) competency development lacks comprehensive research and discussion.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the formulation and validation process of clinical nurse specialist core competencies.

Main Methods:

Exploratory sequential mixed-method design involving Policy Delphi, cross-mapping, content validity studies, and expert verification.
Data collected and analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative methods between 2013 and 2017 in Finland.

Main Results:

Seventy-four preliminary criteria were refined to 50 validated competencies.
The final scale achieved a high Scale Content Validity Index Average of 0.94.
Competency criteria demonstrated potential for clarifying and unifying CNS roles.

Conclusions:

Rigorous research yielded validated CNS competency criteria with high content validity.
Results suggest potential for international competency criteria to enhance global role clarity.
Further research is recommended to validate competencies across diverse international populations.
