Summary

Essential tremor (ET) involves widespread white matter (WM) changes, particularly in motor pathways. Accelerometry measures of tremor severity correlate with these WM deficits, unlike clinical rating scales.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify ET-related white matter (WM) alterations.
  • To explore the relationship between tremor severity and WM changes using advanced imaging and objective measurements.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized 3 Tesla diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS).
  • Compared 12 ET patients with 10 healthy controls.
  • Correlated DTI metrics with tremor frequency and amplitude measured by accelerometry and clinical rating scales.

  • ET patients showed white matter (WM) abnormalities in motor and non-motor tracts, including corticospinal tracts and corpus callosum.

  • Accelerometry-based tremor metrics, not clinical scales, correlate with WM deficits in ET.
  • Objective tremor measurements may offer better insights into the underlying WM pathology in ET.
