Background:

  • The study included 111 Brazilian outpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia (DSM-5).
  • Patients were assessed using the Brazilian BNSS and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).
  • Convergent, discriminant validity, and factor analysis were employed.

  • The BNSS showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.938) and inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.92).
  • Strong correlation with PANSS negative subscale (r=0.866) and weak correlation with PANSS positive subscale (r=0.292) confirmed convergent and discriminant validity.
  • Factor analysis revealed two factors: motivation/pleasure and emotional expressivity.

Conclusions:

  • The Brazilian BNSS is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing negative symptoms in schizophrenia.
  • It is suitable for use in both clinical settings and research within Brazil.
