Background:

  • Persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a common condition in preterm infants, significantly impacting their health outcomes.
  • The incidence of PDA is higher in infants born prematurely, contributing to increased neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the presence of PDA and the clinical condition severity in critically ill preterm infants (gestational age ≤ 32 weeks) with severe respiratory distress.
  • To analyze how PDA influences the need for respiratory support, complications, and mortality rates in this vulnerable population.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study included preterm infants (GA ≤ 32 weeks) admitted to the NICU between 2010 and 2015.
  • Infants were divided into two groups: those with PDA (n=154) and those without PDA (n=186).
  • Data collected included gestational age, birth weight, Apgar scores, respiratory support needs (CPAP, mechanical ventilation), surfactant administration, sepsis, complications, and mortality.

Main Results:

  • Infants with PDA had significantly lower gestational age and birth weights, and lower Apgar scores.

  • The presence of PDA necessitates increased respiratory support, contributes to respiratory distress syndrome severity, and prolongs hospitalization.
  • Effective management of PDA in neonatal intensive care units is vital for improving outcomes and reducing mortality in preterm infants.
