Hearing

57.3K
When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Line Loss01:10

Line Loss

545
The different configurations of source-load connections include wye (star) and delta connections. The relationship between line and phase voltages and currents varies depending on the configuration. When the source is supplying power, it is transmitted through the wires to the load, and during this transmission, some power is absorbed by the wires, leading to line loss.
Line loss impacts power delivery efficiency in a balanced three-phase circuit. The symmetry in such a circuit simplifies the...

Clinical Trials: Overview

5.0K
Clinical development focuses on how the drug will interact with the human body and encompasses four key phases of clinical trials, each serving a specific purpose in assessing the safety and effectiveness of new drugs. These phases overlap and build upon one another. Phase I involves a small group of healthy volunteers (typically 20-80 individuals) or, in cases where significant toxicity is expected, patients with the targeted disease, such as cancer or AIDS. The volunteers are tested for...

Trial and Error and Algorithm01:12

Trial and Error and Algorithm

425
A problem-solving strategy is a plan of action used to find a solution. Different strategies have distinct action plans. Trial and error involves trying different solutions until one works. For instance, to fix a broken printer, you might check ink levels, ensure the paper tray isn't jammed, and verify the printer's connection to your laptop. This method can be time-consuming but is commonly used. Thomas Edison, for example, used trial and error to find a suitable filament for the light...

Clinical Trials

10.8K
Clinical trials are prospective experimental studies conducted on humans to determine the safety and efficacy of treatments, drugs, diet methods, and medical devices. Using statistics in clinical trials enables researchers to derive reasonable and accurate conclusions from the collected data, allowing them to make wise decisions in uncertain situations. In medical research, statistical methods are crucial for preventing errors and bias.
There are four phases in a clinical trial. A phase one...

Reducing Line Loss01:18

Reducing Line Loss

390
In a three-phase circuit, line loss is an indicator of energy dissipated as heat due to the resistance of transmission lines. To address this, incorporating transformers into the system—a step-up transformer at the source and a step-down transformer at the load—is a strategic solution. Two three-phase transformers are introduced to improve this.
With a step-up transformer at the source, the voltage is increased, thereby reducing the current in the transmission lines since power loss in...

Summary

Comprehensive therapy significantly improved hearing and reduced tinnitus in older adults with sensorineural hearing loss compared to acupuncture or mecobalamin alone. This integrated approach offers superior clinical outcomes for age-related hearing decline.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Integrative Medicine

Background:

  • Senile sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a common condition affecting the elderly, leading to significant quality of life impairment.
  • Current treatments for SSNHL, including acupuncture and mecobalamin, show variable efficacy.
  • There is a need to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of integrated therapeutic approaches for SSNHL.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical effectiveness of comprehensive therapy versus acupuncture alone and oral mecobalamin for treating SSNHL in the elderly.
  • To assess the impact of these interventions on pure tone hearing threshold and tinnitus severity.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 126 patients with SSNHL.
  • Participants were assigned to three groups: comprehensive therapy (acupuncture, acupoint injection, auricular point pressing), acupuncture, or oral mecobalamin.
  • Pure tone hearing threshold and tinnitus grading were measured before and after a 2-course treatment period.

Main Results:

  • All three groups showed significant improvements in hearing threshold and tinnitus grading post-treatment (P<0.05).
  • The comprehensive therapy group demonstrated superior outcomes compared to the acupuncture and mecobalamin groups (P<0.05).
  • Total effective rates for hearing threshold were 82.5% (comprehensive), 67.0% (acupuncture), and 62.5% (mecobalamin); for tinnitus, they were 83.3%, 69.7%, and 57.1%, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Comprehensive therapy is more effective than simple acupuncture or oral mecobalamin for improving pure tone hearing threshold in patients with SSNHL.
  • The integrated approach also shows superior efficacy in reducing tinnitus severity in the elderly population.
  • Comprehensive therapy represents a promising treatment strategy for senile sensorineural hearing loss.
