Design Example: Creating a Hydraulic Model of a Dam Spillway

747
Scaled hydraulic models of dam spillways provide a practical way to replicate and study the intricate flow dynamics of these structures. Often built to a 1:15 ratio, these models allow for observing critical water behavior, such as velocity distribution, flow patterns, and energy dissipation.

Endoscopic Procedures III: Video Capsule Endoscopy

883
Capsule endoscopy, or wireless or video capsule endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract. Patients swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. The capsule is equipped with a transmitter, a battery, an LED light source, and a color video camera to capture images throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, tumors, polyps, ulcers,...

Relationship Formation02:12

Relationship Formation

46.2K
What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Habitat Fragmentation02:31

Habitat Fragmentation

21.4K
Habitat fragmentation describes the division of a more extensive, continuous habitat into smaller, discontinuous areas. Human activities such as land conversion, as well as slower geological processes leading to changes in the physical environment, are the two leading causes of habitat fragmentation. The fragmentation process typically follows the same steps: perforation, dissection, fragmentation, shrinkage, and attrition.

Imprinting01:22

Imprinting

11.2K
Behavioral imprinting is observed in some newborn animals and occurs when they develop strong and specific attachments to another animal (usually a parent) following brief, early-life exposures. Offspring imprint onto parents within a brief period after birth or hatching; this time window is called the critical period. Once imprinting occurs, the bond established between the parents and their offspring is usually long-lasting.

    Summary

LightPainter is a new interactive tool for creative long-exposure photography. It uses a drawing metaphor and video mapping to create sophisticated effects, even in difficult situations.

    Area of Science:

    • Computer Graphics
    • Computational Photography
    • Image Processing

    Background:

    • Long-exposure photography captures light trails and motion blur, often requiring specialized equipment and techniques.
    • Creating sophisticated long-exposure effects can be challenging, especially in dynamic or difficult lighting conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To introduce LightPainter, an interactive tool designed to simplify and enhance creative long-exposure photography.
    • To explore the potential of software-defined exposure and intuitive interfaces for image manipulation.

    Main Methods:

    • Developed an interactive tool, LightPainter, utilizing a drawing metaphor for user interaction.
    • Implemented flexible spatiotemporal mapping to translate video data into composite long-exposure images.
