Whole-body immersion bathing in warm water significantly improves fatigue, stress, and overall health compared to showering. This practice enhances physical and emotional well-being, promoting better quality of life.
Area of Science:
- Health and Wellness
- Therapeutic Bathing
- Public Health
Background:
- Showering is the predominant global bathing method.
- Whole-body immersion bathing in warm water is prevalent in Japan.
- Previous studies suggest immersion bathing is linked to better subjective health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the health effects of immersion bathing versus shower bathing.
- To evaluate the impact of warm water immersion on physical and emotional well-being.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled trial involving 38 participants.
- Two-week intervention periods for both immersion bathing (40°C for 10 min) and shower bathing.
- Participants underwent both interventions in a counterbalanced order.
Main Results:
- Immersion bathing showed significantly better outcomes for fatigue, stress, pain, and self-reported health and skin condition compared to showering.
- The SF-8 Health Survey revealed improvements in general health, mental health, role emotional, and social functioning after immersion bathing.
- Mood state scores indicated reductions in stress, tension-anxiety, anger-hostility, and depression-dejection following immersion bathing.
Conclusions:
- Immersion bathing, unlike showering, induces hyperthermic action, increasing blood flow and aiding metabolic waste elimination for physical refreshment.
- Warm water immersion bathing positively impacts both physical and emotional aspects of quality of life.
- Immersion bathing offers significant health benefits beyond those of showering.
