[The use of Gianturco spirals in percutaneous transhepatic bile duct drainage]
Insights
Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage is effective for managing biliary issues. Gianturco coils successfully controlled bleeding and leakage in most patients, with only minor complications.
Area of Science:
- Interventional Radiology
- Gastroenterology
- Hepatology
Context:
- Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) is a crucial minimally invasive procedure.
- Managing complications like bleeding and biliary leakage during PTBD requires effective solutions.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Gianturco coils in controlling severe bleeding and biliary leakage following percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage procedures.
Summary:
- A total of 130 PTBD procedures were performed, including catheter drainage (80 cases) and biliary endoprostheses (50 cases).
- Gianturco coils were utilized in 36 patients to manage severe bleeding and stop biliary leakage.
- Three patients experienced rectifiable complications, indicating a high success rate for coil intervention.
Impact:
- Gianturco coils represent a viable option for managing challenging bleeding and leakage complications during PTBD.
- This approach can potentially reduce the need for more invasive interventions and improve patient outcomes.
Abstract:
One hundred and thirty percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage procedures have been carried out so far (catheter drainage in 80, biliary endoprostheses in 50 cases). In 36 patients Gianturco coils were introduced into the fistulous tract in order to control severe bleeding and to stop biliary leakage. Three patients of this group had rectifiable complications.
