A M Pike, H A Oberman

The American Journal of Surgical Pathology
    |October 1, 1985

    Summary

Solitary juvenile adenofibromas in adolescents rarely recur after excision. Multiple, bilateral tumors, however, often recur, necessitating further treatment but do not become malignant.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Pathology
    • Adolescent Medicine

    Background:

    • Juvenile adenofibromas are benign breast tumors.
    • These tumors are rare in adolescents.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review juvenile adenofibromas in adolescent patients.
    • To determine recurrence rates based on tumor presentation.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 25 adolescent patients with juvenile adenofibromas.
    • Analysis of tumor characteristics (solitary vs. multiple/bilateral) and recurrence.
    • Microscopic examination for cellularity.

    Main Results:

    • Solitary tumors (19 patients) showed no recurrence post-excision.
    • Multiple, bilateral tumors (6 patients) recurred in all cases, often requiring re-excision.
    • Prominent epithelial and stromal cellularity was a common microscopic feature.

    Conclusions:

    • Solitary juvenile adenofibromas can be excised conservatively, preserving breast tissue.
    • Multiple, bilateral juvenile adenofibromas have a high recurrence rate but do not show malignant transformation.
    • This tumor type can uncommonly occur in adults.
