Summary

This study found no significant difference in plasma nitric oxide levels between pre-eclamptic and healthy pregnant women in Ghana. These findings suggest nitric oxide may not be a key factor in pre-eclampsia development.

Background:

  • Preeclampsia is a major cause of maternal and fetal mortality.
  • The exact cause of preeclampsia remains unknown, with several theories proposed.
  • Recent research suggests a potential role for vascular endothelial dysfunction and nitric oxide in preeclampsia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare plasma nitric oxide (NO) levels in women with preeclampsia versus healthy pregnant women.
  • To contribute to understanding the pathophysiology of preeclampsia in a Ghanaian tertiary hospital setting.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 30 pre-eclamptic and 30 healthy pregnant women (aged 18-35, >30 weeks gestation).
  • Plasma nitric oxide levels were measured using the Griess Reagent system.
  • Data were analyzed using SPSS, with independent t-tests for comparison and P ≤ 0.05 considered significant.

Main Results:

  • Parity and Body Mass Index (BMI) were comparable between groups.
  • Significant differences in blood pressure were observed between pre-eclamptic and healthy women.
  • No statistically significant difference in plasma nitric oxide levels was found (P = 0.160).

Conclusions:

  • Plasma nitric oxide levels do not appear to play a significant role in the etiology of preeclampsia.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the complex mechanisms underlying preeclampsia.
