Summary

Intravesical electrical stimulation (IVES) offers a safe and effective new treatment for overactive bladder (OAB) and urgency urinary incontinence (UUI) in women. This study shows significant symptom improvement and enhanced quality of life after IVES therapy.

Background:

  • Overactive bladder (OAB) and urgency urinary incontinence (UUI) significantly impact women's quality of life.

  • Intravesical electrical stimulation (IVES) is an established treatment for neurogenic bladder.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of IVES for women diagnosed with OAB and/or UUI.
  • To assess patient-reported outcomes and objective measures of bladder function following IVES treatment.
  • To explore IVES as a novel therapeutic option for refractory OAB/UUI in women.

Main Methods:

  • An observational study involving women with OAB/UUI who failed prior medical therapy.
  • Four weeks of treatment using an 8-Fr Detrusetâ„¢ IVES catheter.
  • Primary outcome: Patient Global Impression of Improvement (PGI-I) at 3 months; Secondary outcomes: OAB-q SF, PFDI, PFIQ, voiding diary parameters, VAS, and adverse events.

Main Results:

  • 15 out of 17 subjects reported improvement in PGI-I at 3 months post-treatment.
  • Significant improvements were observed in OAB symptom bother, quality of life (OAB-q SF), and pelvic floor distress (PFDI).
  • Mean urinary frequency decreased, and no significant pain was reported during IVES; one UTI occurred.

Conclusions:

  • Intravesical electrical stimulation (IVES) demonstrates potential as a safe and effective treatment for overactive bladder (OAB) in women.
  • IVES offers a promising alternative for patients with OAB/UUI refractory to conventional therapies.
  • Further large-scale, comparative studies are warranted to confirm long-term efficacy and optimal use of IVES for OAB/UUI.
