Abstract:
The one-pot self-assembly of three components (metal acetates as the metal precursor, the tridentate polypyridyl ligand, N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-tert-butylamine (bpta), as a capping ligand and bent dicarboxylic acids, 4,4'-(dimethylsilanediyl)bis-benzoic acid (H2L1) or 4,4'-oxybis-benzoic acid (H2L2), as bridging ligands) under ambient conditions has resulted in the formation of a series of discrete [2 + 2 + 2] molecular squares (1-10) of the general formula [M2(bpta)2L2(H2O)2], where M = Mn, Co, Ni, Zn or Cd and L = L1 or L2. In addition to their characterization by elemental analysis and FTIR spectroscopy, a combination of single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction confirmed their isostructural nature. Their chemical (towards various solvents) and thermal stabilities have been established by powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. The presence of metal centers with coordinated water molecules has provided an opportunity for their use as an efficient Lewis acid catalyst for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction of malononitrile with various aldehydes (98-100% conversion in 100 minutes with 2 mol% catalyst in water). Furthermore, the blue emitting nature of 4 and 10 (M = Cd) was utilized for the selective detection of nitrobenzene via the fluorescence quenching mechanism involving host-guest interactions.

Crystal Field Theory - Tetrahedral and Square Planar Complexes
Crystal field theory (CFT) is applicable to molecules in geometries other than octahedral. In octahedral complexes, the lobes of the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals point directly at the ligands. For tetrahedral complexes, the d orbitals remain in place, but with only four ligands located between the axes. None of the orbitals points directly at the tetrahedral ligands. However, the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals (along the Cartesian axes) overlap with the ligands less than the dxy,...
SN2 Reaction: Kinetics
In a chemical reaction, a relationship exists between the concentration of reactants and the rate at which the reaction proceeds. The study to measure this relationship is known as the kinetics of a chemical reaction. Kinetic studies are used to deduce the rate law of a chemical reaction, which provides information about the species involved during the transition state of the rate-determining step. Thus, kinetic studies help to derive the mechanism of a...
SN2 Reaction: Mechanism
The presence of the more electronegative halogen in the substrate creates a polarized carbon-halide bond. The halide pulls the electron cloud generating an electrophilic center at the carbon atom. Thus, the carbon atom carries a partial positive charge while the halide has a...
SN2 Reaction: Transition State
When the nucleophile approaches the electrophilic carbon with its lone pairs, the halide acts as a leaving group and moves away with the electron-pair bonded to the carbon. Dotted partial bonds represent the bonds being formed or broken...
