Satellite soil moisture data can estimate missing vegetation data in savannas. Combining European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative soil moisture with NDVI improves vegetation monitoring and phenology estimates.
Area of Science:
- Earth and Environmental Sciences
- Remote Sensing
- Ecology
Background:
- Satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) monitors ecosystems but is cloud-affected, causing data gaps.
- Remotely sensed soil moisture, measured in the microwave domain, is cloud-independent, offering a potential solution for data gaps.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the potential of using remotely sensed soil moisture to estimate savannah NDVI.
- To assess the performance of the European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) soil moisture products for NDVI estimation.
Main Methods:
- Compared ESA CCI soil moisture products (ASCAT, SMOS, LPRM-AMSR-E) against MODIS NDVI.
- Simulated NDVI using soil moisture data and compared it to actual NDVI measurements.
- Evaluated the correlation between modelled and remotely sensed NDVI.
Main Results:
- CCI soil moisture showed a higher average correlation with measured NDVI compared to its individual products.
- NDVI modelled from CCI soil moisture achieved an average correlation of 0.81 with remotely sensed NDVI.
- This indicates CCI soil moisture's potential for estimating seasonal savannah NDVI variations.
Conclusions:
- Remotely sensed soil moisture, particularly ESA CCI soil moisture, shows significant promise for filling NDVI data gaps.
- This approach can enhance vegetation phenology information and improve monitoring of savannah ecosystems.
- Further development in using soil moisture for NDVI estimation is warranted.
